I've had the privilege to take part in a grassroots fundraising workshop with Critical Resistance here in Oakland in the last month. Critical Resistance is a leader in the fight to abolish the prison industrial complex.
Critical Resistance's ultimate goal is not just prison abolition but the abolition of the prison industrial complex. That means an end to surveillance, policing, imprisonment and other kinds of social controls as responses to social, economic and political inequalities.
In the workshop, I’ve learned that abolition work is more than closing prisons, it's also reinvesting in the community, investing in healthcare, seeking restorative justice, investing in schools and education, seeking shelter for the houseless and taking responsibility for your community.
I’ve also learned about the power of grassroots fundraising. Critical Resistance maintains itself from small donations from community members. This includes you, me, all of us. This is empowering because Critical Resistance is accountable to the people as they work towards a more inclusive and just world.
